Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a Go application needs a reusable integration layer for language-model calls, prompt handling or documented helper functions.
Who it is for
- Go developers integrating language models into applications
- Teams seeking shared prompt and model-call utilities across provider choices
Documented uses
- Configure a provider and model and generate a response from a Go application
- Build prompts with context, directives and output requirements
- Generate or validate structured JSON output
- Compare model responses and optimize prompts
Requirements & limits
The project is published as an Apache-2.0-licensed public GitHub repository. The documented quick-start uses a provider API key.
- The library's interface covers several providers, while each configured model call still uses a selected provider and model.
- Configuration can be set in code, environment variables or configuration files.
- The README lists prompt optimization, memory retention, structured output and validation, model comparison, retries and ChainOfThought among its capabilities.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Gollm and configure a basic model call
Add the package to a Go project and prepare the documented OpenAI response-generation example.
Before you start
- A Go project
- An OpenAI API key available as the OPENAI_API_KEY environment variable
Steps
Add the package with the command below.
go get github.com/teilomillet/gollmRead the API key from the OPENAI_API_KEY environment variable.
Create an LLM instance configured with provider
openai, modelgpt-4o-mini, and the API key.Create a prompt and pass it to
llm.Generatewith a context.
Expected outcome
The example is structured to print the generated response.
Guide limitations
- The documented example requires a provider API key; it does not describe a key-free setup.
- The guide describes the README setup and code path, not a tested execution.
