Go Modern Guidelines

Go Modern Guidelines is an Apache-2.0-licensed repository of instructions and a supporting CLI that helps AI coding agents write modern Go code. The agent checks the project’s Go version in go.mod, then applies language and standard-library features available up to that version.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when configuring an AI coding agent for Go work and you want its suggestions to reflect the project’s declared Go version and modern Go idioms.

Who it is for

  • Go developers who use AI coding agents to generate or update code.
  • Teams that want agent-generated Go to follow newer language and standard-library idioms.
  • Developers configuring Junie, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent supported through skills.sh.

Documented uses

  • Guide an AI coding agent toward current Go idioms when generating code.
  • Choose language and standard-library features based on the Go version declared in go.mod.
  • Use examples and feature guidance to identify newer alternatives to older coding patterns.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0. Marketplace integrations install a CLI on first use; the Go toolchain must be installed and available on PATH. The CLI targets Go 1.25 or newer, with automatic toolchain switching documented for older local versions.

  • This is a guideline package for coding agents, not a standalone agent, API or general-purpose runtime.
  • The agent reads go.mod and limits its feature choices to the version declared for the project.
  • The guidance covers Go 1.0 through Go 1.27, including features targeted by the modernize analyzer.
  • Marketplace integrations install a small CLI on first use; it is placed in a local cache and does not modify the project.
  • Installation and invocation differ by agent; Junie and Claude Code invoke the skill automatically when relevant, while Claude Code also documents explicit invocation.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Go Modern Guidelines in Claude Code

Add and install the guideline plugin in a Claude Code session so the agent can use it for relevant Go tasks.

Before you start

  • Claude Code session
  • Go toolchain installed and available on PATH
  • Go 1.25 or newer, or an older Go installation with automatic toolchain switching enabled

Steps

  1. Add the repository as a marketplace with /plugin marketplace add JetBrains/go-modern-guidelines.

  2. Install the plugin with /plugin install modern-go-guidelines@goland-claude-marketplace.

  3. Let Claude Code invoke the skill when relevant, or run /modern-go-guidelines:use-modern-go to invoke it explicitly.

Expected outcome

Claude Code has the modern Go guidelines available as a skill for Go work.

Guide limitations

  • The CLI is installed on first use and targets Go 1.25 or newer; an older Go version depends on automatic toolchain switching.
  • The guidelines guide the coding agent; they are not a standalone agent or executable coding runtime.
Source-based practical guide

Install the guidelines for another agent with skills.sh

Install the use-modern-go skill package for an agent supported through skills.sh.

Before you start

  • An agent supported through skills.sh, such as OpenCode
  • Go toolchain installed and available on PATH
  • Go 1.25 or newer, or an older Go installation with automatic toolchain switching enabled

Steps

  1. Run the command below.

    Documented command
    npx skills add JetBrains/go-modern-guidelines
  2. To install only the named skill, use the command below.

    Documented command
npx skills add JetBrains/go-modern-guidelines --skill use-modern-go

Expected outcome

The agent receives the repository’s Go guideline skill through skills.sh.

Guide limitations

  • The README describes this route for other agents via skills.sh; the exact integration steps can depend on the agent.
  • The CLI is installed on first use and requires a Go toolchain.
