Gitdiagram

Gitdiagram is an open-source TypeScript developer tool that converts public or private GitHub repositories into interactive architecture diagrams, Mermaid representations and narrated explainer videos. It also provides a remote MCP server through which AI agents can inspect documented repository structure and retrieve diagram-related information.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Gitdiagram when a repository’s structure needs to be understood, explained or documented before deeper code-level work. It is especially relevant for onboarding, architecture review and agent-assisted repository inspection.

Who it is for

  • Developers onboarding onto unfamiliar repositories
  • Engineering teams documenting architecture
  • Technical educators and trainers
  • AI-agent builders using MCP-compatible clients

Documented uses

  • Map the major components and connections in a GitHub codebase.
  • Navigate from diagram components to linked files or directories.
  • Create PNG or Mermaid representations of repository architecture.
  • Explain a repository through a short narrated video.
  • Expose repository visualization capabilities to AI agents through MCP.

Requirements & limits

The README describes public-repository access, private-repository use with a GitHub token through Private Repos, and a remote MCP server that requires no key or sign-in. The project is MIT-licensed. New explainer-video creation is described as early access, while existing videos can be watched.

  • Repository diagrams are interactive and link components to files or directories, which is useful when architecture needs to lead into source inspection.
  • Mermaid source and a documented Markdown URL pattern support machine-readable or repository-based documentation workflows.
  • AI-agent access is provided through a remote MCP server, with documented client setup paths and a generic server URL for other MCP clients.
  • Private repository analysis requires a GitHub token through the site’s Private Repos feature.
  • Local development depends on Bun, Cloudflare R2, Upstash Redis and model-provider API keys.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Add Gitdiagram to an MCP-capable AI client

Give an AI agent access to Gitdiagram’s repository visualization and explanation capabilities.

Before you start

  • An MCP-capable AI client
  • The remote server URL: https://gitdiagram.com/mcp

Steps

  1. Add the remote MCP server using https://gitdiagram.com/mcp.

  2. In a supported client, ask for a repository architecture explanation, such as how fastapi/fastapi is structured.

  3. Use the returned architecture explanation, components, connections or Mermaid source in the agent workflow.

Expected outcome

The agent can access Gitdiagram’s documented MCP capabilities for public repository visualization and explanation.

Guide limitations

  • The README documents public repository access through the MCP server; private-repository handling through MCP is not specified.
  • The exact setup interface differs between clients.
