Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Flow Go when the work requires the Flow network implementation itself, node-role software, protocol components or a local Flow development environment. Use the related client or CLI repositories when the task is application access or command-line interaction rather than operating the network implementation.

Who it is for

  • Flow protocol contributors
  • Node operators
  • Blockchain infrastructure teams
  • Developers building applications or infrastructure connected to Flow

Documented uses

  • Build Flow node software for documented node roles.
  • Run or contribute to Flow network infrastructure.
  • Study HotStuff consensus, proof-of-stake and distributed-systems implementation patterns.
  • Develop against Flow’s Cadence ecosystem and related network components.
  • Run a local Flow network for manual testing and integration work.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and licensed under AGPL-3.0. The documented development workflow uses Go and Docker; no account or pricing requirement is provided.

  • The repository is written in Go and requires Go 1.26 or later.
  • Docker is the recommended route for building and running Flow locally.
  • The codebase covers distinct collection, consensus, execution, verification and access roles.
  • Imported Go projects may require cgo to be enabled because of the cryptography dependency.
  • The documented direct access-node binary build targets Linux/x86_64.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up Flow Go for local development

Install the documented dependencies and prepare the repository for building, testing and local Flow development.

Before you start

  • A machine with Go 1.26 or later.
  • Docker.
  • Configured GOPATH and GOBIN environment variables, with GOBIN added to PATH.
  • A clone of the flow-go repository.

Steps

  1. Clone the flow-go repository.

  2. Install Go 1.26 or later and Docker.

  3. Set GOPATH and GOBIN, then add GOBIN to PATH.

  4. Run the command below.

    Documented command
    make install-tools
  5. Continue with the repository’s documented build, test or local-network guides.

Expected outcome

The project’s documented tools and environment are installed for Flow development work.

Guide limitations

  • This setup sequence does not document a completed build, test run or network startup.
  • The direct access-node binary target is documented for Linux/x86_64.
