Practical overview
When it fits
Consider Fireworks when an application needs managed model inference, embeddings, or API-based model training and fine-tuning.
Who it is for
- Developers serving open-weight models in applications.
- Teams generating embeddings for search or retrieval workflows.
- Organizations adapting models with their own data or provisioning training compute.
Documented uses
- Serve open-weight models through cloud inference APIs.
- Generate embeddings for application search or retrieval.
- Fine-tune models using customer-provided data.
- Access serverless or dedicated compute for training workloads.
Requirements & limits
Fireworks is a paid service, with usage described using per-token pricing. API offerings include a Serverless Training API.
- The service offers both serverless and dedicated-compute options.
- Pricing is usage-based and described per token.
- The cited pricing information identifies a Serverless Training API.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and sign in to Firectl on Linux
Install the Firectl command-line tool on Linux x86_64 and verify the signed-in account.
Before you start
- A Linux x86_64 system.
- A Fireworks account.
Steps
Download the Linux x86_64 archive with
wget -O firectl.gz https://storage.googleapis.com/fireworks-public/firectl/stable/linux-amd64.gz.Extract it with
gunzip firectl.gz, then install the binary withsudo install -o root -g root -m 0755 firectl /usr/local/bin/firectl.Sign in using
firectl signin. If Custom SSO is set up, pass the account ID:firectl signin.Run
firectl whoamito show the account you signed into.
Expected outcome
Firectl is installed and the signed-in account is displayed.
Guide limitations
- The documented Linux download is for x86_64 only.
- The guide covers installation and account sign-in, not model inference or training.
Compare options for Model inference and serving
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fireworks | Serve open-weight models through cloud inference APIs. | Cloud, Web | Fireworks is a paid service, with usage described using per-token pricing. API offerings include a Serverless Training API. |
| Morphingdb | Import a libtorch model and create predictions from values in a PostgreSQL table. | Docker, Linux, Self-hosted, Server | The README documents a Docker image and a build-from-repository option, followed by connecting to PostgreSQL and enabling the pgdl extension. |
| Gateway — pyadav | Send chat-completion requests to a provider through a common server endpoint. | Server | The repository is public and identifies the project as Apache-2.0 licensed. README installation instructions include binaries, platform package managers and Docker. |
