Practical overview
When it fits
Consider FPC when developing a Hyperledger Fabric application that needs chaincode data and computation protected from potentially untrusted peers, and the project can accommodate the documented SGX and Fabric development requirements.
Who it is for
- Hyperledger Fabric developers building applications that need private chaincode state or computation.
- Teams evaluating SGX-based confidential execution and enclave attestation within a Fabric network.
Documented uses
- Execute Fabric chaincode in an SGX enclave to isolate it from the peer host.
- Keep application data encrypted on the ledger while allowing authorized parties to access it in clear form.
- Register and attest chaincode enclaves, then validate enclave-signed transactions before state updates are committed.
Requirements & limits
- FPC is specific to Hyperledger Fabric and Intel SGX rather than a general smart-contract framework.
- The documented default is SGX simulation mode; hardware-mode use requires SGX-capable hardware and OS support.
- The repository warns that the implementation is a prototype and not intended for production use.
- The README advises using the latest release rather than the potentially unstable main branch, unless contributing.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare and build the FPC development environment
Clone the repository, choose a documented development environment, and build the FPC components.
Before you start
- Familiarity with Hyperledger Fabric and the Intel SGX SDK.
- A single-root GOPATH, as assumed by the README's default configuration.
- Either the Docker-based FPC development environment or a local environment with the required dependencies.
Steps
Clone the repository recursively into the documented GOPATH location and set FPC_PATH to that directory.
Set up the development environment using the Docker-based option or the local-dependencies option.
From FPC_PATH, run make docker and then make.
Expected outcome
The documented build process builds FPC components and runs integration tests.
Guide limitations
- The default build uses SGX simulation mode.
- Hardware-mode operation requires SGX-enabled hardware and corresponding operating-system support.
- The repository describes the code as prototype, not intended for production use.
