Practical overview
When it fits
Use Fablo when you need a repeatable, configurable Hyperledger Fabric network for local development, CI or topology experiments, rather than assembling the network manually.
Who it is for
- Developers prototyping Hyperledger Fabric applications.
- Teams using CI to create and manage Fabric networks.
- Users experimenting with Fabric network topologies and consensus options.
Documented uses
- Generate a Fabric network configuration from a topology file.
- Start and manage a Docker-based network for development or CI.
- Try different organizations, channels and consensus protocols.
- Install or upgrade chaincode across supported languages.
- Use a REST API client for certificate authorities and chaincodes through the separate Fablo REST component.
Requirements & limits
Fablo is open source under the Apache-2.0 license and distributed as a shell script. Its documented environment is Docker.
- Network topology is described in a configuration file covering organizations, channels and chaincodes.
- Consensus choices include RAFT, solo and BFT.
- For Fablo-managed development, keep
fablo-targetintact and out of version control; generated files may contain local paths and cryptographic material. - For a version-controlled generated configuration workflow, the documentation says to use the generated
fabric-docker.shinstead of the Fablo script. - Fablo REST is a separate client component, not the network generator itself.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Initialize and start a sample Fabric network
Create a local Hyperledger Fabric network with sample Node.js chaincode and Fablo REST enabled.
Before you start
- Fablo installed as a shell script.
- Docker environment.
Steps
Run
./fablo init node restin the project directory.Run
./fablo upto start the configured network.
Expected outcome
A local Fabric network is configured with sample Node.js chaincode and a REST API client enabled for each organization.
Guide limitations
- The documented commands take a few minutes to set up the network.
- The local
fablo-targetdirectory should be kept intact and out of version control for Fablo-managed development.
