Practical overview

When it fits

Use EXW3 when an Elixir application needs a higher-level interface for common Ethereum JSON-RPC and smart-contract tasks and can connect to an Ethereum node over HTTP or IPC.

Who it is for

  • Elixir developers building backend applications that need to communicate with an Ethereum node.
  • Teams integrating contract calls, transactions, or event-log retrieval into Elixir software.

Documented uses

  • Query account information, balances, and block numbers from an Ethereum node.
  • Load an ABI, register a contract, and call its methods or send a transaction.
  • Create event filters, retrieve filter changes, and remove filters.

Requirements & limits

The repository identifies EXW3 as open source under the Apache-2.0 license.

  • Requires access to an Ethereum node and its HTTP endpoint or IPC socket.
  • The library exposes a handful of frequently used JSON-RPC commands; Ethereumex is the documented route for other commands.
  • The README notes that address values used as contract ABI inputs may need conversion to integers.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Configure an Ethereum RPC connection

Add the documented HTTP or IPC connection settings for an Ethereum node to an Elixir project using EXW3.

Before you start

  • An Elixir project using Mix
  • An Ethereum node and its HTTP endpoint or IPC socket

Steps

  1. Add {:exw3, "~> 0.6"} to the dependencies in mix.exs.

  2. For HTTP, configure Ethereumex with client_type: :http and the node URL.

  3. For IPC, configure client_type: :ipc and the node's IPC socket path; provide the path as described in the README.

Expected outcome

The project has the documented EXW3 dependency and an Ethereumex connection configuration for an Ethereum node.

Guide limitations

  • This guide covers dependency and connection configuration only; it does not demonstrate an end-to-end execution check.
  • EXW3 supports a limited set of common JSON-RPC commands; the README points to Ethereumex for commands it does not provide.
