Practical overview
When it fits
Use Experts.js when an application needs OpenAI Assistants organized into a delegated workflow, or when a JavaScript project would benefit from the framework's assistant, tool and thread interfaces.
Who it is for
- JavaScript developers building applications with OpenAI Assistants.
- Teams that want specialized assistants to delegate tasks to other assistants as tools.
Documented uses
- Create and configure OpenAI Assistants from JavaScript.
- Link specialized assistants as tools that a parent assistant can call.
- Send messages through managed threads without directly handling run objects.
- Stream assistant text, image and tool events, and report token usage per assistant.
Requirements & limits
The framework is distributed as an npm package. Its repository is public and specifies an MIT license.
- The framework is built around OpenAI's Assistants API; it is not presented as a provider-neutral orchestration layer.
- Assistant interactions require a thread identifier, and the
ask()method accepts a message plus that identifier. - Creating an assistant without an ID creates a new one; deployments can pass an existing assistant ID to reuse it.
- When an assistant is found by ID, local configuration can overwrite differing remote configuration unless
skipUpdateis enabled. - The README documents streaming events and token-usage metrics, which can help applications observe assistant activity.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
