Practical overview
When it fits
Use the repository when you want a concrete Internet Computer sample to learn from or adapt, and can follow the selected example's README and security guidance.
Who it is for
- Developers learning how to build Internet Computer canisters and applications.
- Developers seeking a Motoko, Rust, frontend, native-app or WebAssembly project to study or adapt.
- Developers using AI coding agents with the repository's documented ICP skills.
Documented uses
- Explore a simple full-stack canister with a frontend using the Motoko or Rust hello_world example.
- Add Internet Identity authentication to an example by studying who_am_i.
- Use frontend hosting examples, including React and static-site samples, as starting points for an Internet Computer project.
- Review Unity or other native-app integration examples.
- Study Motoko, Rust or WebAssembly canister patterns for Internet Computer microservices.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0.
- Choose the language or project type first: examples are organized for Motoko and Rust canisters, frontend hosting, native apps and WebAssembly.
- Local command-line setup requires Node.js LTS and the ICP CLI; Motoko and Rust examples have additional language-specific prerequisites.
- A VS Code Dev Container is documented as an alternative setup route with a preconfigured ICP toolchain for Motoko and Rust.
- The repository warns that examples may not implement all security best practices and are not intended as commercial applications.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up a local example project
Prepare a repository example for local development and continue with its own documented deployment instructions.
Before you start
- Node.js LTS
- The ICP CLI packages: @icp-sdk/icp-cli and @icp-sdk/ic-wasm
- For Motoko examples: ic-mops
- For Rust examples: Rust and the wasm32-unknown-unknown target
Steps
Install Node.js LTS and the ICP CLI packages.
For a Motoko example, install ic-mops; for a Rust example, install Rust and add the wasm32-unknown-unknown target.
Clone the repository and change into the selected language and example directory.
Follow that example's README for deployment instructions.
Expected outcome
A local copy of a selected example with the documented language prerequisites in place, ready for its README's next steps.
Guide limitations
- Deployment steps vary by example and are not detailed in the repository overview.
- The examples are not intended as commercial applications and do not include an express or implied support or warranty commitment.
