Practical overview
When it fits
Use Ethjsonrpc when a Python project needs to make documented Ethereum JSON-RPC calls and can connect to a separately running Ethereum client.
Who it is for
- Python developers who need to query an Ethereum node from scripts or applications.
- Developers integrating Ethereum JSON-RPC calls or smart-contract method calls into Python projects.
Documented uses
- Request node and network information such as client version, gas price and block number.
- Use a Python interface to create contracts and call contract methods.
- Build lightweight utilities that communicate with Ethereum through a JSON-RPC client.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists the Unlicense. The README shows installation through pip; it does not establish hosted-service access or pricing.
- A reachable Ethereum client is required; the README gives geth as an example.
- The README cautions that the API is not stable, so upgrade planning matters for dependent projects.
- The README includes Ubuntu-specific prerequisite instructions and a pip installation command.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Ethjsonrpc and connect to an Ethereum node
Install the Python library and make a documented JSON-RPC call to a running Ethereum client.
Before you start
- Python environment and the prerequisite development libraries and tools appropriate to the documented Ubuntu version.
- A running Ethereum client, such as geth, reachable at the host and port used by the script.
Steps
On the relevant documented Ubuntu release, install the listed Python, GCC and OpenSSL development prerequisites; virtualenv is optional but recommended.
Install the package with the command below.
pip install ethjsonrpcCreate an
EthJsonRpcclient using the node host and port, as in the README example with127.0.0.1and8545.Call a documented method such as
net_version()oreth_blockNumber().
Expected outcome
A Python program configured to send JSON-RPC calls to the connected Ethereum client and request node information.
Guide limitations
- The guide reflects Ubuntu prerequisites listed for versions 14.04, 16.04 and 20.04; it does not specify setup instructions for other environments.
- The README says the API is not yet stable and recommends caution when upgrading.
- The documented example requires a separately running Ethereum client.
