Eth Provider

Eth Provider is a JavaScript client library that gives Ethereum applications an EIP-1193 provider interface and connects them to injected providers or RPC endpoints over HTTP, WebSocket or IPC. It supports prioritized endpoint attempts, reconnection after connection loss and status updates, with documented use in browsers, Node and Electron.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when an Ethereum application needs a provider layer across supported transports, injected-provider discovery, or ordered RPC endpoint fallback.

Who it is for

  • Developers building Ethereum applications in JavaScript.
  • Teams needing injected-provider discovery or configurable RPC connections in browser, Node or Electron applications.

Documented uses

  • Connect an Ethereum application to an injected wallet provider or an RPC endpoint.
  • Configure ordered RPC targets and fall back to the next target when a connection attempt fails.
  • Reconnect after a connection is lost and provide status updates to application code.
  • Connect Node or Electron software to local Ethereum nodes through IPC, HTTP or WebSocket.

Requirements & limits

The repository documents installation through npm. The project is licensed under GPL-3.0.

  • Transport availability depends on the runtime: IPC is documented for Node and Electron, not browsers.
  • Default targets differ by environment: injected and Frame in browsers; Frame and direct connections in Node and Electron.
  • Multiple targets are tried in the order supplied, making their priority order an application configuration choice.
  • Infura and Alchemy presets require their respective project IDs.
  • The library is open source under GPL-3.0.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Eth Provider and connect it to Web3

Add the library to a JavaScript project and pass its provider to Web3.

Before you start

  • A JavaScript project using npm
  • Web3 in the application

Steps

  1. Install the package with the command below.

    Documented command
    npm install eth-provider --save
  2. Require eth-provider in the application.

  3. Call the provider and pass the result to new Web3(...).

  4. For a configured connection, pass an RPC target or an ordered list of targets to the provider.

Expected outcome

The application has an Eth Provider instance connected through its selected or default provider targets and supplied to Web3.

Guide limitations

  • The documented default targets depend on whether the environment is a browser or Node/Electron.
  • Browser applications cannot access local-node IPC endpoints.
  • The guide documents setup and connection configuration, not a particular application workflow.
