Practical overview
When it fits
Use Enferno when building a Flask web application with a coding agent and you want the agent to work from a defined project structure, receive feedback from a test suite and start with included authentication. Consider its optional MCP server when an MCP-aware client needs read-only access to exposed project information.
Who it is for
- Developers using coding agents to scaffold or extend Flask web applications.
- Teams building web apps that want built-in authentication and tests to give agents feedback.
- Developers who want to provide compatible agents with project-specific guidance or read-only access to selected project information.
Documented uses
- Scaffold a Flask application and add models, admin pages, APIs, Vue pages and migrations with coding-agent assistance.
- Add common authentication flows, roles and an admin audit log to an application.
- Run tests that check access controls, migrations, CSRF and authentication behavior after code changes.
- Let an MCP-aware agent inspect exposed routes, schema, migration revision and admin audit-log information.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and displays an MIT license. Local setup requires Python 3.11 or later and uv.
- The frontend uses Vue 3 and Vuetify, with vendored dependencies and no build step.
- SQLite is the default database; PostgreSQL is an option.
- Redis-backed sessions and Celery are optional, as is the read-only MCP server.
- The test suite uses in-memory SQLite by default; PostgreSQL testing requires a disposable database because the suite drops its tables.
- Agent guidance includes AGENTS.md for project rules and an enferno-dev skill for implementation patterns.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up an Enferno project locally
Create the database, admin user and local Flask app using the repository’s documented setup sequence.
Before you start
- Python 3.11 or later
- uv
- A local environment for running the Flask application
Steps
Clone the Enferno repository into a project directory and enter it.
Run ./setup.sh to install dependencies and generate a .env file with secrets.
Run uv run flask create-db, then uv run flask install to create the database and admin user.
Run uv run flask run to start the app, then run uv run pytest to execute the test suite.
Expected outcome
A locally started Flask application with its database and admin user initialized, followed by the documented tests.
Guide limitations
- The default database is SQLite; PostgreSQL can be configured separately.
- The test suite drops every table in the database it uses. A PostgreSQL test database must be disposable.
- This sequence documents local setup and testing, not production deployment.
Connect an MCP-aware agent to Enferno
Prepare the optional read-only MCP server and repository configuration for an MCP-aware agent.
Before you start
- An Enferno project
- An MCP-aware coding agent
Steps
Install the development and MCP extras with uv sync --extra dev --extra mcp.
Use the repository’s .mcp.json configuration to let an MCP-aware agent offer to connect.
Expected outcome
The project is configured for an MCP-aware agent to offer a connection to Enferno’s read-only server.
Guide limitations
- The repository does not enumerate the server’s capabilities or specify supported clients.
- The server is read-only; this setup does not document agent-driven changes through MCP.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
