Practical overview
When it fits
Use Edb when investigating how a particular Ethereum transaction executed and you want to examine the contract at Solidity source level.
Who it is for
- Solidity developers investigating the execution of an on-chain Ethereum transaction.
- Developers who need to inspect local values or control execution at source level rather than interpret only bytecode traces.
- Developers working over SSH or without a browser who prefer a terminal debugger.
Documented uses
- Replay an Ethereum transaction using chain state fetched through Ethereum RPC endpoints.
- Step through Solidity execution and inspect local variables.
- Evaluate expressions and control execution with breakpoints or watchpoints.
- Choose between a browser-based debugger and a keyboard-driven terminal interface.
Requirements & limits
Edb is a CLI project. Its README documents a pre-built-binary installer and source builds; building from source requires stable Rust (2024 edition) and Bun for the embedded web UI. The repository specifies the AGPL-3.0 license.
- Transaction replay requires Ethereum RPC access to fetch on-chain state; the README permits comma-separated RPC URLs and describes a public-endpoint fallback.
- The browser UI is the default;
--ui=tuiselects the terminal interface, which the project identifies as useful over SSH or without a browser. - The pre-built-binary installer avoids requiring Rust or Bun; source builds require both, with Bun needed for the embedded web UI.
- The project says it is under active development, so features and APIs may change.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Replay and inspect an on-chain transaction
Launch Edb on a transaction hash and choose its browser or terminal debugger interface.
Before you start
- Edb installed using the documented pre-built-binary installer or built from source.
- An Ethereum transaction hash.
- Ethereum RPC URL or URLs; the README also documents a public-endpoint fallback when none are provided.
Steps
Run
edb --rpc-urls replayto start the browser-based debugger. For a terminal session, run
edb --rpc-urls --ui=tui replay.Use source-level stepping, local-variable inspection, expression evaluation, and breakpoints or watchpoints to examine execution.
Expected outcome
A replayed transaction in Edb’s browser or terminal debugger, with Solidity-level inspection controls.
Guide limitations
- The project is under active development, and features or APIs may change.
- The public RPC fallback may be slow or unreliable; the README says using multiple endpoints can make replay faster.
