Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a Blender mesh needs a prompt-generated or refined texture that follows its geometry and is baked into a UV map.
Who it is for
- Blender artists who want to generate textures directly on 3D meshes.
- 3D asset creators refining an existing texture with image-to-texture generation.
- Users with a supported desktop environment and local GPU resources.
Documented uses
- Generate a diffuse texture for a mesh from a text prompt.
- Refine an existing texture using image-to-texture generation.
- Project multiple geometry-guided views and bake them into a mesh UV texture.
Requirements & limits
The README describes the add-on as free and open source under GPL-3.0. It runs locally and requires an internet connection for initial dependency and model downloads.
- Blender 4.2 or newer is required; the project lists Windows x64 and Linux x64, with macOS unsupported.
- NVIDIA GPU with CUDA is recommended; AMD GPU support is listed for Linux through ROCm 6.3, and CPU-only use is very slow.
- The README estimates about 3.7 GiB VRAM for SD 1.5 at default settings and about 10 GiB for SDXL with custom SD resolution set to 768.
- SDXL at its default 1024 resolution is reported to run out of memory on a 12 GB GPU.
- The generated views are blended into one texture, so UV islands across materials must not overlap.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install DiffusedTexture in Blender
Install the add-on, its Python dependencies and optionally a model before using it in Blender.
Before you start
- Blender 4.2 or newer.
- Windows x64 or Linux x64; macOS is not supported.
- Internet access for dependency and model downloads.
- About 5 GB for Python dependencies, plus 11 GB for SD 1.5 models or 21 GB for SDXL models.
Steps
Download the add-on ZIP from the repository's latest release.
In Blender, open Edit > Preferences > Add-ons, choose Install from Disk, select the ZIP and enable online access under Preferences > System > Network.
In the add-on preferences, select a dependency backend and install Python dependencies.
Restart Blender. Optionally select SD 1.5 or SDXL and install its basic model; otherwise the model downloads at first generation.
Expected outcome
The add-on's DiffusedTexture sidebar tab appears in Blender after dependencies are installed and Blender is restarted.
Guide limitations
- Generation requires a GPU for practical performance; CPU-only operation is described as very slow.
- The README recommends NVIDIA CUDA and lists AMD GPU support on Linux through ROCm 6.3.
Prepare a mesh for AI texturing
Prepare the mesh and select its UV map for the documented Blender texturing workflow.
Before you start
- DiffusedTexture installed in Blender.
- A mesh with a UV map whose islands do not overlap.
Steps
UV-unwrap the mesh; the README says Smart UV Project works well.
Open the DiffusedTexture tab in the 3D Viewport sidebar by pressing N.
Choose the mesh object and its UV map.
Expected outcome
The mesh and UV map are selected for the add-on's subsequent prompt and generation settings.
Guide limitations
- The whole mesh receives one texture, so UV islands must not overlap, including islands across different materials.
