Practical overview
When it fits
Use Degenbot when developing a custom MEV bot for supported EVM DeFi protocols and choosing between a Rust-only implementation and a Python-driven interface to the shared Rust core.
Who it is for
- Developers building MEV bots in Rust.
- Python developers who want to drive Degenbot’s Rust core.
- Teams developing arbitrage or liquidation systems around its listed DeFi integrations.
Documented uses
- Build and manage supported pool and token state.
- Calculate swaps using pool data.
- Develop arbitrage bots across supported DEX integrations.
- Develop liquidation bots, including integrations with Aave V3.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and MIT-licensed. The README lists Python 3.12 or later and pip, uv or a similar package manager for Python installation. It describes the umbrella Rust crate as a Git or path dependency until the workspace is published to crates.io.
- Rust owns the stateful and performance-critical core; Python supplies the user-facing API, orchestration and configuration.
- The Python setup requires Python 3.12 or later.
- The Bot-based example uses an HTTP RPC endpoint and checks that its chain ID matches the configured chain.
- Pool swap calculations can run without network calls when pool data is already injected.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the Python package
Install Degenbot from source using the documented Python setup path.
Before you start
- Python 3.12 or later
- A package manager such as pip or uv
- Git
Steps
Clone https://github.com/BowTiedDevil/degenbot.git.
Change into the degenbot repository directory.
Run
just bootstrap, or use the command below for release-equivalent defaults.pip install -e .
Expected outcome
The repository’s documented source-installation setup is complete.
Guide limitations
- These steps describe installation, not running or deploying a bot.
Create a pool and calculate a swap in Python
Use the documented Bot-based example to build a pool and calculate token output.
Before you start
- Degenbot installed in a Python 3.12-or-later environment
- An HTTP RPC endpoint for the selected chain, with the configured chain ID matching the endpoint
- A pool address supported by Degenbot
Steps
Initialize
degenbot.Botwith a chain ID, RPC node URL and database path.Create a pool with
bot.build_pool()and a token withbot.build_erc20token().Call
pool.calculate_tokens_out_from_tokens_in()with an input token and quantity.
Expected outcome
The example returns a calculated token output from the pool’s injected state.
Guide limitations
- The example does not document a complete trading or on-chain execution workflow.
- The swap calculation is described as requiring no network call once pool data is injected.
