Practical overview
When it fits
Use Codexpro when you want a ChatGPT coding session to access selected local repositories through MCP, rather than sending the project to a separate indexing service or using a hosted coding workspace.
Who it is for
- Developers who want ChatGPT to work with project files on their own machine.
- Teams or individuals who want repository-scoped coding assistance and reviewable local changes.
Documented uses
- Inspect a project’s structure, entry points, symbols and relationships.
- Search code by text, regex, symbol, references or potential impact.
- Edit allowed repository files and review changed areas, likely dependents and related tests.
- Run allowlisted checks and preserve coding plans or context for a handoff.
Requirements & limits
The documented setup requires Node.js 20+, a ChatGPT account that can create custom MCP plugins, and an HTTPS URL to the local machine for ChatGPT web. The project is open source under the MIT license.
- Repository access is limited to roots the user allows.
- Analysis is local, bounded and cached by a workspace fingerprint; no model API key, language-server daemon, embedding service or vector database is required.
- Writes remain hidden unless workspace write mode is enabled; safe Bash is the default and public tunnels require a Codexpro HTTP token.
- ChatGPT web requires HTTPS, while the project also documents a local-only tunnel mode.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Codexpro as a ChatGPT plugin
Install Codexpro in a repository and connect its local MCP server to ChatGPT.
Before you start
- Node.js 20 or later
- A ChatGPT account that can create custom MCP plugins
- An HTTPS URL to the local machine for ChatGPT web, such as a tunnel or Tailscale Funnel
Steps
Install Codexpro globally with npm install -g codexpro, move to the repository, and run codexpro setup.
In ChatGPT, enable Developer Mode in Settings → Security and login, leaving CSP enforcement on.
Under Settings → Plugins, create a plugin named CodexPro and paste the URL copied by Codexpro as the Server URL.
Choose No Authentication / None in the plugin form; the Codexpro token is already in the URL. Do not share that URL.
Expected outcome
ChatGPT has a plugin connection to the local Codexpro server for the repository the user allows.
Guide limitations
- ChatGPT web requires HTTPS to reach the local machine.
- The guide describes plugin setup; it does not verify a successful connection or a coding task.
