CodeQA

CodeQA is an open-source, locally run web application that indexes source code and answers natural-language questions about a repository with contextual results and references. It uses Tree-sitter to parse code, OpenAI or Jina embeddings to represent chunks, and LanceDB for vector storage and search; Flask serves the interface and Redis supports caching and session management.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use CodeQA when you have a local repository to index and want to explore its code through natural-language search or chat rather than relying only on manual file browsing.

Who it is for

  • Developers exploring unfamiliar repositories or seeking implementation details through natural-language queries.
  • Teams or individual developers who want a local, searchable codebase reference with chat-style exploration.

Documented uses

  • Parse code structure and metadata into searchable chunks.
  • Build a vector index for a local codebase.
  • Search a repository with natural-language queries using @codebase.
  • Ask codebase questions and review contextual answers with references.
  • Enable reranking to seek more relevant search results.

Requirements & limits

The documented workflow runs a local server and opens its interface at http://localhost:5001. The README requires an OpenAI API key and describes Jina embeddings as an alternative; it states the Jina key is optional when using OpenAI embeddings. The repository declares an MIT license.

  • The indexing pipeline uses Tree-sitter, LanceDB, Redis and a Flask web interface.
  • The README specifies Python 3.8–3.11 for its Tree-sitter setup and requires Redis at localhost:6379.
  • OpenAI is the documented default API-key configuration; Jina embeddings are an explicitly documented alternative. Adapting to another provider requires modification.
  • The README identifies Python, Rust, JavaScript and Java as supported languages.
  • The repository includes a separate optimization branch; its reported speed figures are branch-specific and not a general performance guarantee.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up CodeQA and build a repository index

Install the application, configure an embedding provider, and create a LanceDB index for a codebase.

Before you start

  • Python 3.8–3.11 for the documented Tree-sitter setup
  • Redis server running on localhost:6379
  • An OpenAI API key; a Jina API key can be used instead for Jina embeddings

Steps

  1. Clone the repository and enter its directory.

  2. Create and activate a Python virtual environment, then install packages from requirements.txt.

  3. Start Redis and configure the API key in a .env file. The README says the Jina key is optional when using OpenAI embeddings.

  4. Run chmod +x index_codebase.sh, then run ./index_codebase.sh with the absolute path to the codebase.

Expected outcome

The codebase is parsed and its chunks, embeddings and references are stored in LanceDB for search and question answering.

Guide limitations

  • The documented Tree-sitter setup specifies Python 3.8–3.11.
  • This covers index setup only; it does not describe the subsequent server interaction.
Source-based practical guide

Start the local code search interface

Launch CodeQA for a folder and open its browser-based query interface.

Before you start

  • A configured CodeQA installation and a codebase folder path
  • Redis server running on localhost:6379
  • OpenAI API key configured; Jina embeddings are an alternative described in the README

Steps

  1. Run python app.py with the codebase folder path.

  2. Open http://localhost:5001 in a web browser.

  3. Use @codebase in a query to retrieve context through embeddings; enable re-ranking for more relevant results.

Expected outcome

A local web interface is available for code search and chat-style code exploration, with contextual answers and references.

Guide limitations

  • The README describes access through the local server at port 5001; it does not document hosted access.
