Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Clio when a software task requires repository inspection and command-line changes within an interactive, approval-based workflow.

Who it is for

  • Developers who prefer terminal-based workflows.
  • People working with local repositories, SSH sessions, containers, or headless servers.
  • Teams or individuals exploring multi-agent, Git-aware coding workflows.

Documented uses

  • Inspect an unfamiliar codebase or configuration path.
  • Investigate bugs and propose implementation plans.
  • Edit files, run tests or commands, and commit approved changes.
  • Continue coding sessions across projects with stored history and memory.
  • Run tasks on remote systems through SSH.

Requirements & limits

The project is documented for Linux and macOS CLI use, is publicly available under the GPL-3.0 license, and provides Homebrew, Docker, and manual installation routes. Provider authentication varies: GitHub Copilot uses OAuth, many listed providers use API keys, and llama.cpp and LM Studio are listed without API keys.

  • Terminal-first operation rather than a graphical coding interface.
  • Perl 5.32+ and standard Unix tools are documented prerequisites.
  • The workflow includes planning and user approval before implementation.
  • Git operations, undo, persistent sessions, memory, sub-agents, MCP, plugins, and custom skills are documented capabilities.
  • Sixteen provider configurations are listed, including hosted and local options.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Clio and configure an AI provider

Set up Clio locally and connect it to a supported AI provider.

Before you start

  • A Linux or macOS environment for CLI use.
  • Perl 5.32 or later and standard Unix tools including Git and curl.
  • A supported provider account or API key, unless using the documented local llama.cpp or LM Studio configurations.
  • For the manual route, access to the public Git repository.

Steps

  1. Check dependencies with ./check-deps.

  2. Install through Homebrew on macOS, Docker, or the documented manual Git clone and install.sh route.

  3. Start Clio and use /api login for GitHub Copilot, or set a provider and API key with /api set provider, /api set key, then save with /config save.

  4. Begin a new session with ./clio --new or resume the previous session with ./clio --resume.

Expected outcome

Clio is installed and configured for an initial terminal session with the selected provider.

Guide limitations

  • The documented setup covers installation and provider configuration, but does not verify a particular machine or provider account.
  • The Docker example uses a published image and mounts the current workspace and a Clio authentication volume.
COMPARE OPTIONS
