Practical overview
When it fits
Use Clawcode when you want a model-backed coding workflow launched from a terminal, or want to coordinate multiple agent roles around software-development work.
Who it is for
- Developers who want to submit coding tasks from a project terminal.
- Technical teams coordinating architecture, implementation, QA and delivery work across agent roles.
Documented uses
- Ask an agent to refactor an API or perform another coding task.
- Summarize Git changes as release notes in a non-interactive run.
- Coordinate specialist roles on a development task through `/clawteam`.
- Configure a provider and model for terminal-based agent sessions.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists a GPL-3.0 license. The documented setup requires Python 3.12 or later and provider configuration.
- The documented interface is a CLI, with both interactive TUI and non-interactive modes.
- Provider support includes named providers and OpenAI-compatible APIs; model access requires provider configuration.
- Basic setup is separate from optional DeepNote knowledge workflows and UI style routing.
- The repository identifies Python as its primary language and describes the implementation as Python and Rust.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and configure Clawcode
Set up the CLI and configure a model provider for an interactive or prompt-based session.
Before you start
- Python 3.12 or later
- A provider API key for the configured model provider
- The Clawcode repository
Steps
From the repository directory, create and activate a Python virtual environment.
Install the project with the command below.
pip install -e ".[dev]"Create
.clawcode.jsonin the project root with a provider API key and agent model configuration, or set the documented provider API key environment variable.Launch an interactive session with
clawcode -c "/path/to/project"or submit a non-interactive task withclawcode -p "Refactor this API".
Expected outcome
A configured Clawcode CLI session, either interactive or prompt-based.
Guide limitations
- The documented provider example uses an OpenAI API key and GPT-4o model; other providers require their corresponding configuration.
- The guide documents setup and invocation, not verification of a completed coding task.
Compare options for Agent orchestration
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clawcode | Ask an agent to refactor an API or perform another coding task. | CLI | The repository is public and lists a GPL-3.0 license. The documented setup requires Python 3.12 or later and provider configuration. |
| Bedrock Engineer | Create project folders and files, read and write project content, and manage project structure. | Cloud, Web | The README describes a native app with downloads for macOS and Windows and build targets for macOS, Windows and Linux. Users must configure AWS credentials. The repository lists an MIT-0 license. |
| Agor | Run coding-agent tasks in separate Git branches with distinct environments and conversation histories. | CLI, Web | The repository documents an npm installation for self-hosting and also points to Agor Cloud Open Beta. It requires Node.js 22.12 or later and Git for the documented npm setup. |
