Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Chonkie when text ingestion and chunk preparation are distinct engineering concerns in a RAG or retrieval system, especially when a workflow needs several chunking or refinement stages.

Who it is for

  • Developers building RAG preprocessing workflows
  • Teams that need configurable text splitting before indexing
  • Engineers integrating chunking and refinement into Python or self-hosted services

Documented uses

  • Split source text into retrieval-ready chunks
  • Apply semantic, recursive, sentence, token or fast byte-oriented chunking
  • Chain chunking and refinement stages
  • Expose chunkers and pipelines through a self-hosted REST API
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The project is a public GitHub repository with an MIT license and documents installation through pip or uv. It also documents self-hosted API and Docker deployment paths.

  • Python is the primary implementation language.
  • The package offers basic and selective installations as well as a broader all installation.
  • The project documents multiple chunkers, pipeline composition and refinement stages.
  • A self-hosted REST API is documented for chunkers, refineries and reusable pipelines.
  • The repository advises that the all installation is not recommended for production environments.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Chonkie and process text with a chunker

Set up the Python package and split text into chunks that expose text and token-count data.

Before you start

  • Python environment with pip or uv
  • Chonkie package

Steps

  1. Install the package with pip install chonkie or uv pip install chonkie.

  2. Import RecursiveChunker from chonkie.

  3. Initialize the chunker and pass text to it.

  4. Iterate over the returned chunks and read each chunk’s text and token_count values.

Expected outcome

The text is processed into Chonkie chunks whose content and token counts can be inspected.

Guide limitations

  • This recipe documents basic chunking only; it does not cover indexing, retrieval or a complete RAG application.
  • The example uses RecursiveChunker and does not establish that its defaults suit every document type.
