Practical overview
When it fits
Use ChatData when you want a chat-style interface for searching reference collections or your own uploaded documents, especially where semantic search and structured filters are both useful.
Who it is for
- Researchers and students exploring academic papers and reference material.
- Teams or individuals who want to query an uploaded document collection.
Documented uses
- Ask natural-language questions across Wikipedia and arXiv material hosted through MyScale.
- Create a personal knowledge base from uploaded documents and retrieve relevant information.
- Use structured metadata such as dates or string arrays to filter retrieval queries.
Requirements & limits
The repository provides a local setup path and a Hugging Face Spaces link. The local quickstart requires an OpenAI key.
- The project combines LangChain retrieval with MyScale vector search and SQL-based filtering.
- Its README documents Wikipedia and arXiv knowledge bases as well as user-uploaded documents.
- The repository is licensed under MIT.
- The README cautions that some self-query retriever features were still being improved and were not yet merged.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up ChatData locally
Prepare and launch the Streamlit app from its repository.
Before you start
- Python 3
- An OpenAI key
- The ChatData repository and its app dependencies
Steps
Change to the app/ directory.
Create and activate a Python virtual environment.
Install dependencies from requirements.txt.
Copy .streamlit/secrets.example.toml to .streamlit/secrets.toml and add the OpenAI key.
Start the app with python3 -m streamlit run app.py.
Expected outcome
The repository's quickstart launches the ChatData Streamlit app locally.
Guide limitations
- The quickstart documents setup and launch, but does not provide a complete guide to configuring a separate MyScale database or uploading a document collection.
Compare options for Vector search
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
