Practical overview
When it fits
Use Caspian when building an agent that needs to send or receive messages across multiple supported channels and you want a common SDK interface for channel configuration and message handling.
Who it is for
- Developers building AI agents that need to communicate with people through messaging or email channels.
- Teams that want to configure multiple communication channels around shared message-handling rules.
Documented uses
- Connect an agent to channels including Slack, Discord, Telegram, email, WhatsApp and SMS.
- Define shared rules for handling messages across configured channels.
- Handle channel-specific needs such as message threading and webhook verification.
Requirements & limits
The repository documents Python and TypeScript packages. Manual setup lists Python 3.10+ and Node 18+ or Bun. The project is open source under AGPL-3.0.
- The README describes hosted gateway polling and self-hosted inbound handling as separate integration approaches.
- Telegram setup requires a bot token; the hosted example also uses a Caspian API key.
- Slack and Discord can use held-open sockets; the README lists an optional Discord extra.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Caspian with a self-hosted Telegram webhook
Configure the SDK to handle Telegram messages through your application’s webhook route.
Before you start
- Python 3.10+ or TypeScript with Node 18+ or Bun
- Caspian SDK installed using pip or npm
- A Telegram bot token
- A webhook URL for your application
Steps
Create a Caspian client without an API key.
Add Telegram with self-hosting enabled, the bot token and webhook URL.
Register a message handler for Telegram and use the thread and message arguments to define the response.
Pass the request body and headers from your HTTP route to the SDK’s Telegram handler.
Expected outcome
The application is configured to process Telegram webhook requests through Caspian and use a shared message handler.
Guide limitations
- The README shows setup examples; it does not establish that a particular application or deployment has been tested.
- The guide covers Telegram only.
Configure hosted Telegram messaging
Set up a Python handler that receives messages through Caspian’s hosted gateway and posts a response.
Before you start
- Python 3.10+
- The Caspian SDK installed with pip
- A Caspian API key
- A Telegram bot token
Steps
Create a Caspian client with the API key.
Add Telegram using the bot token.
Register a message handler and use the thread object to post a reply.
Call the client’s run method to poll the gateway.
Expected outcome
The documented example configures a Telegram handler that replies to incoming messages through the hosted gateway.
Guide limitations
- The README describes gateway polling; it does not provide application-specific deployment instructions.
- The Telegram bot token is supplied by the developer.
