Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when developing Java software that needs Cardano client functionality and you want to integrate a listed backend provider rather than build those client integrations from scratch.

Who it is for

  • Java developers adding Cardano functionality to an application.
  • Teams choosing a backend provider for Cardano data and transaction services.

Documented uses

  • Create Cardano mainnet or testnet account objects and retrieve addresses or mnemonics.
  • Configure a backend service and access documented services for transactions, fees, blocks, assets, UTXOs, metadata, epochs, and addresses.
  • Build ADA payment transactions with metadata using the QuickTx example.
  • Explore examples and tutorials for transfers, native-script multisignature transfers, and governance APIs.

Requirements & limits

The repository identifies the library as open source under the MIT license.

  • Java version depends on the release line: the README lists Java 11 or later for 0.7.x and 0.6.x, and Java 17 or later for master.
  • The top-level cardano-client-lib module includes the other library modules except backend-provider modules; a backend module must be selected separately.
  • The README identifies 0.7.2 as the latest stable version and 0.8.0-pre4 as a preview in the provided documentation.
  • The project notes that some APIs referenced in older posts are deprecated, so consult current documentation for API details.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Configure a Cardano backend service in a Java application

Create a Blockfrost or Koios backend service and obtain the library’s service interfaces.

Before you start

  • A Java application using Cardano Client Lib.
  • For Blockfrost, a testnet project ID; the example uses the library’s testnet URL constant.

Steps

  1. Choose the Blockfrost or Koios backend provider.

  2. Instantiate BFBackendService with Constants.BLOCKFROST_TESTNET_URL and your Blockfrost project ID, or instantiate KoiosBackendService with KOIOS_TESTNET_URL.

  3. Call the backend service’s getters to obtain services such as fee calculation, transaction, block, asset, UTxO, metadata, epoch, and address services.

Expected outcome

A backend service instance is configured, with the listed service interfaces available from it.

Guide limitations

  • The source shows service construction and getters, but does not document dependency declarations, credentials beyond the Blockfrost project ID, or subsequent service operations.
  • The shown Blockfrost URL and Koios URL are testnet examples.
