Brontes

Brontes is a Rust-based blockchain analytics pipeline built on Reth that transforms raw Ethereum data into structured datasets, enriches analysis with off-chain information, and provides a modular framework for user-defined inspectors.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Brontes when an Ethereum research or analytics workflow needs a data-processing pipeline and custom inspectors, particularly for trace-level analysis or MEV investigations.

Who it is for

  • Blockchain researchers and data scientists
  • MEV analysts and strategists
  • DeFi protocol developers
  • Teams working with large-scale Ethereum data

Documented uses

  • Prepare raw Ethereum data in a structured form for analysis.
  • Develop custom inspectors for analytics such as systematic MEV research.
  • Add metadata, centralized-exchange prices or peer-to-peer data to on-chain analysis.
  • Work with trace-level blockchain data without building all preprocessing and normalization from scratch.

Requirements & limits

The public GitHub repository specifies an Apache-2.0 license. The project is described as a Linux, CLI and self-hosted tool.

  • Brontes is a processing pipeline built on Reth, rather than a hosted blockchain explorer.
  • Its inspector framework supports user-defined analytics, so the analysis logic depends on the inspectors developed for the task.
  • The project is written in Rust and targets Ethereum data.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Brontes from source and prepare historical data

Build Brontes on Linux or macOS and configure a historical-analysis data source.

Before you start

  • Linux or macOS.
  • Hardware depends on the data setup: historical analysis lists 2TB SSD, 16GB+ memory, 8+ CPU cores, and stable 30Mbps+ bandwidth; using a Reth archive node lists 5TB+ disk, 32GB+ memory, 8+ high-clock-speed CPU cores, and stable 30Mbps+ bandwidth.
  • A Rust build environment and access to the Brontes repository.
  • An environment configured using the repository's sample.env file.

Steps

  1. Clone the repository with the command below, then enter it with cd brontes.

    Documented command
    git clone https://github.com/SorellaLabs/brontes
  2. Build from source with RUSTFLAGS="-C target-cpu=native" cargo install --path crates/bin --profile maxperf --locked. The RUSTFLAGS and maxperf profile are optional performance recommendations; omit them for tests or debugging.

  3. Rename sample.env to .env and update its values for your setup before running Brontes or downloading a database snapshot.

  4. For historical analysis, download a snapshot with brontes db download-snapshot -s $start_block$ -e $end_block$. To download the full range since the merge block, omit both range flags; this is recommended for large ranges.

Expected outcome

Brontes is built from source and configured for historical analysis using a downloaded database snapshot.

Guide limitations

  • Only source installation is currently supported; Docker images are not offered.
  • Brontes does not offer public query access or chain-head access. Historical snapshots are updated Monday and Thursday at midnight.
  • Snapshots include pre-generated traces that take significant space; users running Brontes with Reth do not require these traces, though they can speed processing.
  • For analysis using on-chain state or custom modules that interact with the Reth database, the documented alternative is to set up a Reth Archive Node by following the Reth Installation Guide.

Run Brontes over a specified block range

Start Brontes to process one block interval or multiple intervals in parallel.

Before you start

  • Brontes is installed and its environment is configured.
  • Required database access is available; running at the tip requires access to the database API.

Steps

  1. Run Brontes for an inclusive start block and exclusive end block with brontes run --start-block 1234567 --end-block 2345678.

  2. Alternatively, process multiple ranges in parallel with brontes run --ranges 100-120 750-900 3000-5000.

  3. Optionally set the analysis quote asset with brontes run ... --quote-asset [ASSET_ADDRESS]; the default is USDT, which the documentation recommends keeping.

Expected outcome

Brontes starts processing the requested block range or ranges, using the configured quote asset if specified.

Guide limitations

  • If the start block is omitted, Brontes runs at the tip until manually stopped, provided database API access is available.
  • If the end block is omitted, Brontes runs historically and continues at the tip until manually stopped, provided database API access is available.
  • The documented run instructions do not enumerate all CLI options; consult the CLI reference for the complete list.
