Botvana

Botvana is an open-source, distributed Rust platform for developing and operating crypto market-making and arbitrage strategies. It combines exchange-connected bot nodes, a central coordination server and an egui control application. Within each node, separate engines handle market data, indicators, trading decisions and exchange order routing.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Consider Botvana when developing a distributed crypto-trading system and its documented engine separation fits the intended design. Its README supports a Linux build-and-launch workflow and identifies Binance and FTX for its early phase.

Who it is for

  • Developers building market-making or arbitrage bots for crypto exchanges.
  • Operators coordinating configured bot nodes through a central server.
  • Rust developers exploring an event-driven, thread-per-core trading architecture.

Documented uses

  • Transform exchange market data into Botvana's internal types.
  • Provide indicators based on market data and make trading decisions in separate engines.
  • Route orders through an exchange gateway.
  • Coordinate bot-node configuration through the central server.
  • Build and launch the server, bot node and desktop control application.

Requirements & limits

  • The project is described as being in very early development.
  • The documented exchange list is Binance and FTX; adding another exchange would require modification, and no implemented or tested additional connector is established.
  • The README requires Linux kernel version above 5.13, Rust 1.58 or higher, and Terraform for development.
  • Bot nodes connect to a central botvana-server, which expects configuration in cfg/default.toml.
  • The node architecture uses one pinned thread per logical CPU core, custom event loops and SPSC channels.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Build and launch Botvana's documented components

Compile the project and start its server, one bot node and the egui control station using the README sequence.

Before you start

  • Linux kernel version above 5.13
  • Rust 1.58 or higher
  • Terraform
  • The listed Debian/Ubuntu development libraries for compiling egui

Steps

  1. Clone the Botvana repository.

  2. Install the README-listed egui build dependencies.

  3. Run the command below to build the components.

    Documented command
    cargo build
  4. Start dependencies with docker-compose up -d.

  5. Launch botvana-server, then botnode with SERVER_ADDR=127.0.0.1:7978 BOT_ID=0, and station-egui using the README commands.

Expected outcome

The documented sequence starts the coordination server, a bot node and the control station after building the project.

Guide limitations

  • The project identifies itself as being in very early development.
  • The server expects configuration in cfg/default.toml.
  • The README lists Binance and FTX as supported exchanges in its early phase.
