Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use blocksmith when a Python application needs the documented key-generation, Bitcoin or Ethereum address-derivation, or Ethereum checksum-formatting functions.

Who it is for

  • Python developers building wallet setup workflows or address-generation utilities.
  • Developers who need Ethereum checksum formatting as part of address handling.

Documented uses

  • Generate a private key through the library's KeyGenerator interface.
  • Derive a Bitcoin address from a private key.
  • Derive and checksum-format an Ethereum address.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • The README documents installation with pip and use from Python code.
  • The repository declares an Apache-2.0 license.
  • The documented purpose is key and address manipulation, not a hosted wallet or transaction-signing interface.
  • The README shows seed input for key generation but does not provide security guidance for entropy or key custody.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Generate a key and derive an address in Python

Use the README’s documented package workflow to generate a private key and create a Bitcoin or Ethereum address.

Before you start

  • Python environment with pip
  • blocksmith package, installed with pip install blocksmith

Steps

  1. Install blocksmith with pip.

  2. Import blocksmith and create a KeyGenerator.

  3. Provide a seed input and call generate_key() to obtain a private key.

  4. Pass the key to BitcoinWallet.generate_address() or EthereumWallet.generate_address(); for Ethereum, optionally pass the resulting address to EthereumWallet.checksum_address().

Expected outcome

A generated private key and a corresponding Bitcoin or Ethereum address; the Ethereum method can also return checksum-formatted casing.

Guide limitations

  • The README’s seed-input example is illustrative and does not establish guidance for secure randomness.
  • The documented examples do not cover key storage, recovery, transaction signing, or production wallet operations.
