Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you need a documented starting point for a self-hosted certificate workflow backed by an Ethereum contract, especially for local development or test-network deployment.
Who it is for
- Developers building a self-operated certificate issuance and validation application.
- Organizations exploring blockchain-backed verification for credentials.
Documented uses
- Generate certificates through an application connected to an Ethereum smart contract.
- Provide a service for validating certificates against the deployed contract.
- Configure a local development stack with Ganache and MongoDB.
Requirements & limits
- The stack requires a JavaScript server, MongoDB and an Ethereum RPC connection.
- Local development uses Ganache and requires starting the RPC server and deploying the contract for each project run.
- The README demonstrates Rinkeby configuration and does not establish current-network compatibility.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the local development environment
Prepare the documented local blockchain, database and server setup.
Before you start
- Ganache CLI installed through npm
- MongoDB server running
- A configured certification database and database user
- Database credentials in the project’s .env file
Steps
Start the local RPC server with the command below.
npm run ganacheDeploy the contract locally with the command below.
npm run contract-deployIn MongoDB, select the
certificationdatabase and create a database user with the documented dbOwner role.Add the database username and password to
.env, then start the server with the command below.npm start
Expected outcome
The documented local blockchain, database and JavaScript server setup is in place.
Guide limitations
- The README says the local RPC server and contract deployment steps must be run each time the project is run.
- This setup guide does not document certificate issuance or validation steps.
Deploy the contract to a documented test network
Configure the application for test-network contract deployment.
Before you start
- A MetaMask account and its mnemonic
- An Infura project and RPC endpoint
- A .env file in the project root
Steps
Create an Infura project and obtain its RPC endpoint.
Put the mnemonic and endpoint URL in the root
.envfile, following.env.example.Run the command below and save the contract address returned by the deployment.
npm run deploy
Expected outcome
The contract is deployed to the configured test network and its address is available for further use.
Guide limitations
- The README’s example uses Rinkeby and does not verify compatibility with a specific current network.
- The guide documents contract deployment, not a complete production deployment.
