Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when a Bitcoin application needs BIP32-compatible hierarchical key derivation and can supply a compatible elliptic-curve implementation.

Who it is for

  • Developers building Bitcoin wallet applications or wallet components.
  • JavaScript and TypeScript developers who need to derive child nodes from extended keys.

Documented uses

  • Import a Base58-encoded extended key.
  • Derive a child wallet node using a derivation path.
  • Integrate BIP32 key derivation into a wallet application.

Requirements & limits

The public repository specifies an MIT license.

  • The library requires a compatible elliptic-curve implementation; its example uses tiny-secp256k1.
  • The repository documents TypeScript and Node.js examples.
  • The example covers importing a Base58 extended key and deriving a child by path.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Derive a child key from a Base58 extended key

Use BIP32 to import an extended key and derive a child key along a path.

Before you start

  • A JavaScript or TypeScript project using bip32.
  • A tiny-secp256k1-compatible elliptic-curve implementation, such as tiny-secp256k1.
  • A Base58-encoded extended key and a derivation path.

Steps

  1. Import BIP32Factory from bip32 and provide the compatible elliptic-curve implementation to create the BIP32 instance.

  2. Import the extended key with bip32.fromBase58(...).

  3. Call node.derivePath(...) with the desired derivation path to obtain a child node.

Expected outcome

A BIP32 child node derived from the imported extended key and specified path.

Guide limitations

  • The library requires a tiny-secp256k1-compatible implementation to be wrapped by BIP32Factory.
  • The example demonstrates deriving a child node; it does not document further wallet operations.
