AI Evaluation & Observability

Beyondllm

Beyondllm is an open-source Python toolkit for prototyping retrieval-augmented generation applications and evaluating their retrieval and generated responses. Its documented workflow connects source data, document retrieval, and LLM response generation; its Observer is described as monitoring latency and cost for OpenAI LLM performance.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Beyondllm when developing a Python RAG prototype and you want examples that combine data sourcing, retrieval, generation, and evaluation. Its Observer is relevant when monitoring OpenAI LLM performance for latency and cost.

Who it is for

  • Developers prototyping retrieval-augmented generation applications.
  • Teams that want evaluation steps for retrieved documents and generated answers in their RAG workflow.
  • Practitioners exploring OpenAI-model latency and cost monitoring through the documented Observer.

Documented uses

  • Turn source material such as a YouTube video into retrievable content for question answering.
  • Generate answers using retrieved context.
  • Inspect retrieval and answer evaluation measures, including context relevancy, answer relevancy, and groundness.
  • Monitor latency and cost for OpenAI LLM performance using the Observer described in the README.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0. The README documents installation through pip and identifies Python 3.8–3.11. Its examples use Google or OpenAI API keys, depending on the model setup.

  • The README provides both a default-model example using a Google API key and a custom OpenAI embeddings and chat-model example.
  • Evaluation examples include retrieval metrics and RAG-triad measures for context relevancy, answer relevancy, and groundness.
  • The Observer documentation specifically describes OpenAI model latency and cost monitoring.
  • A Google Colab demo is linked from the repository README.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Build and evaluate a YouTube-video RAG example

Follow the documented custom-model example to generate an answer from a YouTube video and inspect retrieval and response evaluations.

Before you start

  • Python 3.8, 3.9, 3.10, or 3.11
  • Beyondllm installed with pip
  • An OpenAI API key
  • A YouTube video URL to use as the data source

Steps

  1. Install the package with the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install beyondllm
  2. Set the OPENAI_API_KEY environment variable using the key-entry approach shown in the README.

  3. Use Beyondllm's source, embeddings, retrieval, LLM, and generator components to load the video, create a retriever, and define a question.

  4. Call the pipeline for a response, then call the retriever evaluation and RAG-triad evaluation methods shown in the example.

Expected outcome

A generated response accompanied by retrieval metrics and RAG-triad measures for context relevancy, answer relevancy, and groundness.

Guide limitations

  • The example uses OpenAI embeddings and a ChatOpenAIModel; the README does not establish that the same steps work unchanged with other providers.
  • The guide reflects the documented example and is not a human verification of execution.
