Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an application needs JSON access to Beefy vault and market metrics, or when a developer wants to run and adapt the backend rather than collect the data services independently.
Who it is for
- Developers building DeFi dashboards
- Teams creating vault research or comparison tools
- Builders needing Beefy data for APY or TVL alerts
- Developers integrating Beefy chain, pool and vault configuration
Documented uses
- Retrieve Beefy prices, APYs, TVL and vault metadata programmatically
- Compare vault metrics across supported chains
- Power alerts for changes in vault APY or TVL
- Provide a starting point for chain-specific vault directories
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and uses the MIT license. Local setup requires the documented Node and pnpm versions. The service can use default public RPCs or custom RPC configuration.
- The API caches data in memory, so historical analysis requires a separate persistence and scheduling layer.
- Initial data collection occurs at boot and can take a minute or two.
- Endpoints return 503 until boot-time data is ready.
- Custom RPC endpoints can be configured when public RPC rate limits are insufficient.
- The repository includes TypeScript source, per-chain configuration, contract ABIs and RPC utilities.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Run Beefy API locally
Set up the API from source and start its JSON service.
Before you start
- Node version specified in .nvmrc
- pnpm version pinned by package.json
Steps
Install dependencies with pnpm install.
Start the service with pnpm start.
Use port 3000 unless PORT is configured to override it.
Wait for the initial data fetch to complete before using endpoints.
Expected outcome
A locally running Beefy API service with data served as JSON after startup loading completes.
Guide limitations
- The README says initial loading can take a minute or two.
- Endpoints return 503 until their data is ready.
- The service uses in-memory caching, so persistent historical storage is not included.
- Public RPCs are heavily rate-limited.
