Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use AskPESU when the relevant information is likely to appear in r/PESU discussions and you want an answer accompanied by its source threads.

Who it is for

  • People looking for answers in PES University community discussions.
  • Developers exploring a RAG application with separate thread ingestion, Qdrant indexing and a streaming web interface.

Documented uses

  • Ask a question about PES University and receive an answer grounded in indexed r/PESU threads.
  • Inspect the source discussions behind an answer.
  • Study or adapt a pipeline that ingests Reddit threads into Qdrant and retrieves them with hybrid search.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The README identifies production and development API environments hosted on Hugging Face Spaces. Local development requires uv, and frontend work requires Node.js 24. The repository is licensed under MIT.

  • Answers are grounded in r/PESU discussions, not presented as a general university knowledge base.
  • The API uses hybrid search over dense and BM25 vectors in Qdrant and returns the threads used.
  • The codebase separates the API and frontend from the database service responsible for indexing new threads and backfilling history.
  • Local test mode uses canned answers; live retrieval requires Qdrant configuration and an HF_TOKEN.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Start the local interface in test mode

Run the API with its React interface using canned answers, without configuring live retrieval.

Before you start

  • The AskPESU repository
  • uv
  • Node.js 24 for frontend work

Steps

  1. Clone the repository and enter its directory.

  2. Run the command below, then copy .env.example to .env and fill it in.

    Documented command
uv sync --extra api --extra db
  3. In services/api, start the backend with ENV=test uv run python -m app.app.

  4. In a second terminal, enter services/api/frontend, run the command below, then the command below.

    Documented command
    npm ci
    Documented command
    npm run dev

Expected outcome

A local API and React interface are available for trying the canned-answer test mode.

Guide limitations

  • Test mode serves canned answers rather than answers retrieved from Qdrant.
  • Real question answering requires Qdrant variables and HF_TOKEN in .env, and running the API without ENV=test.
