Practical overview
When it fits
Use the crates when a Rust cryptographic project needs one or more of the documented algebraic building blocks, and evaluate the repository's explicit prototype warning before considering its role in a project.
Who it is for
- Rust developers building zkSNARK applications who need algebraic components.
- Cryptographic software developers working with finite fields, elliptic curves, polynomial operations, FFTs, or serialization and point compression.
Documented uses
- Use finite-field abstractions and implementations in cryptographic software.
- Work with prime-order groups and elliptic curves, including pairing-friendly curves.
- Represent univariate, multivariate, or multilinear polynomials and use FFTs over finite fields.
- Serialize finite-field and elliptic-curve values and compress points.
Requirements & limits
- The repository is Rust-based and documents stable Rust 1.51 or later for compilation.
- The optional field-arithmetic assembly backend requires Rust 1.59 or later and compatible x86_64 instruction support; it is disabled by default.
- The project is explicitly described by its maintainers as an academic proof-of-concept prototype, not ready for production use.
- The repository states that the crates are dual-licensed under MIT or Apache License 2.0.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build the algebra crates with Cargo
Clone the repository and build its libraries in release mode using the documented stable Rust toolchain.
Before you start
- Rust stable toolchain, version 1.51 or later
- Cargo
Steps
Install the stable toolchain with rustup.
Clone the arkworks-rs/algebra repository and change into its directory.
Run the command below.
cargo build --release
Expected outcome
Cargo builds the repository's Rust libraries in release mode.
Guide limitations
- The repository describes the code as an academic proof-of-concept prototype that has not received careful code review and is not ready for production use.
- The optional assembly backend is not enabled by this build command.
