Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you need to build a custom script-based chat widget for an AnythingLLM workspace. The main AnythingLLM application also publishes a pre-built script for cases where custom widget source work is unnecessary.
Who it is for
- Web developers customizing an embedded AnythingLLM chat interface
- Site operators who want visitors to chat with an AnythingLLM workspace
Documented uses
- Expose a workspace and its embedded knowledge base as a public-facing chat bubble.
- Build, customize, host and link a JavaScript embed script.
- Adjust chat prompts, model settings, language, appearance and widget behavior through script attributes.
Requirements & limits
- The project is a submodule of AnythingLLM, not a standalone chat service; the embed requires an embed ID and the base API URL of an AnythingLLM instance.
- The README documents a script-tag embed as the primary method; iframe support is marked work in progress.
- Operators are responsible for configuring the embed to limit excessive model use; the README recommends limits per embed and per session.
- Visitors use random session IDs to persist chats and cannot see the context snippets available in the core application.
- The repository is public, JavaScript-based and licensed under MIT.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up and build the custom embed script
Prepare the widget’s development example and compile a script for hosting.
Before you start
- The AnythingLLM Embedded Chat Widget repository
- Yarn and the repository’s development dependencies
- Required keys for the development embed
Steps
From the repository root, enter the embed directory with
cd embed.Install the development and script dependencies with
yarn.Run
yarn devto boot the example HTML page; the script rebuilds when files insrcchange.Run
yarn buildto compile and minify the script for hosting and linking.
Expected outcome
A compiled, minified widget script that can be hosted and linked.
Guide limitations
- The setup instructions do not document configuring a production embed or deploying it to a particular host.
- The documented iframe integration is marked as a work in progress.
