Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want to explore a gallery through image-aware search or chat, or to adapt an open-source image knowledge-base application.
Who it is for
- People who want to search a photo collection using natural-language descriptions.
- Developers exploring an image knowledge base for gallery questions or content-generation workflows.
Documented uses
- Automatically identify metadata in images stored in an album.
- Search a gallery and retrieve images relevant to a query.
- Ask questions about gallery images and receive generated responses.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0. The README recommends local operation; it also lists a live demo. Commercial use requires contacting the maintainers.
- The documented image workflow uses gpt-4o-mini for metadata generation, OpenAI’s Embedding API for vectorization, and PostgreSQL for storage; the introduction also names Haiku as a visual model.
- The README requires OpenAI and Anthropic API keys for its documented local setup.
- The project exposes separate search and chat APIs: one returns relevant images, while the other retrieves images and generates a response.
- The README describes the project as experimental and recommends running it locally.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Album AI locally and add gallery images
Build a local Album AI instance and make images in its project directory available for search and chat.
Before you start
- Git and a local environment able to run the project’s build script.
- OpenAI and Anthropic API keys.
- A local IP address to enter as HOST_NAME.
- A proxy address if direct access to the OpenAI API is unavailable.
Steps
Clone the repository and change into the album-ai directory.
Copy .env.prod.example to .env.prod and edit HOST_NAME and the API key settings; configure PROXY_URL when needed for OpenAI API access.
Make build.sh executable and run it.
Open http://localhost:8080 in a browser, then add photos to the project’s images directory for background metadata recognition and vectorization.
Expected outcome
A local browser interface for searching and chatting with images after they have been processed.
Guide limitations
- The README recommends running locally and describes server deployment only as a self-managed option.
- Commercial use requires contacting the maintainers.
Compare options for Retrieval-augmented applications
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
