Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a project needs a single desktop workspace for pre-production, AI-generated shots and post-production rather than a prompt-only generation step.
Who it is for
- Filmmakers planning and assembling AI-assisted video productions.
- AI artists who want a project-folder workflow spanning storyboards, generated footage and post-production.
Documented uses
- Organize a film project across scripts, director treatments, references and storyboards.
- Generate image and video assets using keys for supported AI providers.
- Review shot continuity and arrange selected footage on an editing timeline.
- Grade footage and export a completed sequence.
- Create moodboards, 3D previs and project research materials.
Requirements & limits
The repository identifies the editor core as GPL-3.0-or-later. The project documentation provides macOS DMG and Windows EXE installers through GitHub Releases.
- AI generation requires users to supply provider keys; provider usage is billed by the provider unless using a self-managed credit system.
- Projects are organized in local folders, and some storage and integration features require the Electron desktop app.
- The documented developer setup requires Node.js 20.19+ or 22.12+ and npm 10+; Python 3 is needed only for optional local audio tools.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the desktop editor
Open the desktop app and prepare a project folder for AI-assisted production.
Before you start
- A macOS or Windows computer.
- At least one key for a supported AI provider.
Steps
Download the macOS DMG or Windows EXE from the GitHub Releases page.
Open the installer.
Add at least one provider key in Settings.
Choose a project folder.
Expected outcome
The desktop app is set up with a project folder and a provider key.
Guide limitations
- Provider usage is billed by the provider unless routed through your own credit system.
- Local project storage, folder pickers and some integrations require the Electron app.
