Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want a filmmaking-oriented workspace to plan scenes and shots before generating media, rather than managing generation as a series of disconnected prompts.
Who it is for
- Filmmakers and storytellers planning AI-generated scenes and shots.
- Developers who want to run or contribute to an open-source filmmaking workstation.
Documented uses
- Block out scenes and position cameras in a 3D storyboard.
- Generate storyboard images and turn shots into video.
- Use multiple references to support continuity across shots.
- Add dialogue and audio, then export a film timeline.
- Connect local ComfyUI generation or cloud generation through Fal or Replicate.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and specifies an AGPL-3.0 license. The README documents local setup and cloud provider credentials; it does not state a price.
- ComfyUI is the local generation engine and must be started separately in the manual setup.
- Fal or Replicate credentials are needed for their cloud generation options; the README says to restart the backend after saving a key before cloud drivers appear.
- The README labels the project a work in progress and notes that features may change and some pipelines are experimental.
- The documented stack includes Python 3.10+, FastAPI, Next.js, React, Three.js and Tailwind CSS.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Guide limitations
- This guide follows the README's manual developer setup; it does not establish that every feature or pipeline is stable.
- Cloud generation requires provider credentials; ComfyUI must be running separately.
