Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want a local Markdown-based knowledge system and are prepared to configure Obsidian and Claude Code, rather than adopt a hosted knowledge app.
Who it is for
- People who want saved articles, media and documents organized into a connected personal wiki.
- Obsidian users who want Claude Code agent resources and a starter structure for maintaining their vault.
- Developers learning agent workflows through the repository’s course and reference materials.
Documented uses
- Capture articles and other source material in a raw archive and ingest it into linked wiki pages.
- Connect new information to existing source, concept, entity and synthesis pages.
- Ask questions about the resulting knowledge base.
- Keep a project workspace separate from the longer-term knowledge wiki.
- Check links, inspect vault statistics and export a graph with the included scripts.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists an MIT license. Its README describes the guide and starter materials as free and requiring no signup; the local setup uses Obsidian and an agent.
- The knowledge is stored in plain Markdown files in a local vault.
- Claude Code and Obsidian are the documented core tools; MCP is presented as an optional connection.
- The repository combines an implementation guide and starter resources with a separate agents course and reference handbooks.
- The included scripts are described as dependency-free Python for link checking, statistics and graph export.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the starter vault for Obsidian and Claude Code
Create a local vault from the repository template and prepare its agent resources for use with Claude Code.
Before you start
- Git
- Obsidian
- Claude Code
- A terminal
Steps
Clone the repository and copy its vault-template folder to a local folder such as ~/brain.
Copy the skills, commands, agents and scripts folders into the corresponding locations in the new vault as shown in the README.
Remove the copied folder README files from the agent resource directories, then change into the vault folder and start Claude Code.
Open the folder in Obsidian using “Open folder as vault.”
Expected outcome
A local Obsidian vault containing the starter structure and copied Claude Code resources.
Guide limitations
- The steps cover local setup; they do not by themselves configure optional MCP access, live-data connections or scheduled maintenance.
- On Windows, the README says to use python in place of python3 for the relevant script instructions.
