Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when developing a Python AI application and you want a shared interface between application logic and model or search-service implementations.
Who it is for
- Python developers building applications that call language models.
- Teams adding vector-backed similarity search or semantic-search APIs to an application.
- Developers who want to change model or service implementations without changing surrounding application logic.
Documented uses
- Connect application code to LLM services through common interfaces.
- Switch between text-completion and chat-completion models through configuration.
- Add similarity-search functionality using vector-database adapters.
- Connect MCP tools to language models, including models accessed through providers without native MCP support.
Requirements & limits
The repository identifies the project as open source under the MIT license. The README documents Python 3.10–3.14 and installation through PyPI.
- Basic usage is documented with OPENAI_API_KEY set in the operating-system environment.
- Similarity search requires the chromadb package.
- Provider-specific integrations may require additional packages, including anthropic for Anthropic Claude and google-genai for Gemini.
- Local Hugging Face Transformers inference requires Transformers and a deep-learning library such as PyTorch, TensorFlow or Flax.
- Configuration is supported through microcore.configure, environment variables, or configuration files.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install AI Microcore and prepare basic configuration
Add the library to a Python project and prepare the documented basic LLM configuration.
Before you start
- Python 3.10, 3.11, 3.12, 3.13 or 3.14
- An OpenAI API key available as the OPENAI_API_KEY operating-system environment variable
Steps
Install the package from PyPI with pip install ai-microcore.
Set OPENAI_API_KEY in the operating-system environment.
Configure the library with microcore.configure(**params), a project .env file, a custom configuration file, or environment variables.
Expected outcome
The package is installed and the documented minimum configuration for basic use is in place.
Guide limitations
- This setup procedure does not demonstrate an application request or verify a successful connection.
- Similarity search requires the chromadb pip package.
