Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when the main requirement is a self-hosted orchestration layer for narrow workers and registered functions, rather than a packaged end-user agent application.
Who it is for
- Rust developers building self-hosted AI-agent services.
- Teams composing multi-worker agent runtimes from specialized capabilities.
- Engineers implementing function- and trigger-driven workflows on the iii engine.
- Builders who need reusable agent, workflow, MCP or plugin surfaces in one repository.
Documented uses
- Register domain-specific worker functions with the iii engine.
- Compose multi-worker agent workflows around shared routing and retry infrastructure.
- Expose agent capabilities through HTTP, cron or pub/sub triggers.
- Call registered functions across workers through the iii SDK.
- Organize agent templates, YAML workflows, MCP configurations and reusable bundles.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed Apache-2.0. The documented setup uses Linux-oriented CLI commands, a self-hosted iii engine and an Anthropic API key.
- The runtime depends on the iii engine and its worker connection model.
- Workers are separate binaries rather than shared in-process components.
- Rust is the documented implementation language for the worker model.
- The repository includes 64 Rust workers and one Python embedding worker in its documented layout.
- The documented TypeScript adaptation is Experimental and lacks a described worker interface.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the AgentOS workspace and local runtime
Prepare the iii engine, AgentOS workspace and documented local interfaces.
Before you start
- Linux, CLI and a self-hosted environment.
- The iii engine installation script.
- A cloned AgentOS repository.
- An environment file with an Anthropic API key.
- Rust and Cargo for the workspace build.
Steps
Install the iii engine binary with the repository's documented installation command.
Clone the AgentOS repository, enter its directory, copy .env.example to .env and set ANTHROPIC_API_KEY.
Build the workspace with cargo build --workspace --release.
Start the iii engine with config.yaml and start the workers with bash scripts/dev-up.sh.
Open the TUI with cargo run --release -p agentos-tui, or use the documented HTTP request example for a realm.
Expected outcome
A local engine and worker runtime is prepared, with the TUI available for chat and the documented HTTP surface available for realm creation.
Guide limitations
- The documentation does not provide a complete deployment example.
- The TypeScript topic does not establish a documented TypeScript worker interface; that adaptation is Experimental.
- The steps describe setup and startup, not an independent compatibility or execution test.
