Practical overview
When it fits
Use AgentNexus when developing a Java/Spring service that needs configurable agent orchestration, chained or scheduled workflows, or retrieval grounded in files and Git repositories.
Who it is for
- Java developers building configurable AI agent services with Spring.
- Teams connecting multiple agents into sequential or delegated tasks.
- Developers adding file- or repository-based retrieval to an agent application.
Documented uses
- Configure agents from stored models, tools, prompts, memory, and knowledge sources.
- Plan complex tasks and delegate work among a dynamically assembled agent team.
- Chain agents into workflows and trigger workflows on a cron schedule.
- Ingest uploaded files or Git repositories into PgVector for retrieval-augmented generation.
- Persist multi-turn conversation context using a conversation ID.
Requirements & limits
The project is documented as open source, and its README states that it uses the MIT License.
- The documented implementation stack requires Java 17+, Maven 3.6+, MySQL 8.0+, PostgreSQL 15+ with pgvector, and Nacos 2.2.0+.
- Docker is optional in the README's setup instructions.
- Developers must provide database configuration and model-provider API keys in Nacos.
- Java Function beans can be exposed as pluggable tools through Spring AI ToolCallback and associated with agents.
- The visual workflow designer and observability dashboard appear in the README roadmap as planned features, not current capabilities.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare the AgentNexus service configuration
Set up the documented prerequisites and configuration for building and starting AgentNexus.
Before you start
- Java 17 or later
- Maven 3.6 or later
- MySQL 8.0 or later
- PostgreSQL 15 or later with the pgvector extension
- Nacos 2.2.0 or later
Steps
Clone the AgentNexus repository and change into its project directory.
Run the SQL script at sql/schema.sql in MySQL to create the required tables.
Create a YAML configuration in Nacos with Data ID agent-nexus-dev.yml, or a custom name, and Group DEFAULT_GROUP; use resources/application.yml as the template and configure database settings and model-provider API keys.
Build with Maven using the documented package command, then start target/AgentNexus.jar with Java.
Expected outcome
The documented setup path builds and starts the application; its README points to Swagger UI at localhost:8091/swagger-ui.html for API documentation, subject to the configured port.
Guide limitations
- The guide covers the README's setup path, not independent verification of a successful deployment.
- A running Nacos service and configured databases are required by the listed setup; Docker is described only as an optional way to start dependency services.
Compare options for Retrieval-augmented applications
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agentnexus | Configure agents from stored models, tools, prompts, memory, and knowledge sources. | Docker, Self-hosted, Server | The project is documented as open source, and its README states that it uses the MIT License. |
| Hydra — hassenhamdi | Ingest Markdown documents into a searchable knowledge base. | CLI, Self-hosted, Server | The repository is public and identifies an MIT license. Local setup requires Python 3.10+, a Gemini API key and Docker with Docker Compose for Milvus. |
