Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an AI coding assistant needs reusable, task-oriented Azure guidance derived from Microsoft Learn documentation.
Who it is for
- Developers who use AI coding assistants for Azure cloud development.
- Teams that want to reuse structured Azure instructions across coding tasks or projects.
Documented uses
- Give an assistant focused guidance for Azure service development.
- Ask for help with tasks such as setting up Azure Functions, considering Azure Container Apps best practices or configuring Azure API Management.
- Install reusable skill packs through a supported plugin workflow or by copying them into an assistant’s skills directory.
Requirements & limits
- Plugin installation is documented for VS Code, Claude Code and OpenAI Codex; the manual route covers a broader set of assistants.
- VS Code plugin setup requires the agent plugins preview; manual VS Code setup requires enabling chat.agent.skills.
- The collection uses progressive disclosure, loading skill descriptions first and fuller instructions or resources when needed.
- The README identifies CC BY 4.0 and MIT licenses.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install the Azure skills manually
Copy the repository’s skills into a coding assistant’s project-level or personal skills directory.
Before you start
- A coding assistant with a skills directory.
- Git installed to clone the repository.
Steps
Clone https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/agent-skills.git.
Copy the contents of the repository’s skills/ directory to the destination for the chosen assistant.
For VS Code manual mode, enable chat.agent.skills in Settings.
Expected outcome
The assistant can discover the installed skills and use their Azure guidance when relevant.
Guide limitations
- Destination directories vary by assistant; consult the repository installation instructions.
- The repository lists project-level paths for GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and Gemini CLI, and both project-level and personal paths for some assistants.
Install the plugin in Claude Code
Add the MicrosoftDocs marketplace and install its Azure Agent Skills plugin.
Before you start
- Claude Code.
Steps
Run /plugin marketplace add MicrosoftDocs/agent-skills.
Run /plugin install azure-agent-skills@microsoft-agent-skills.
Expected outcome
The Azure Agent Skills plugin is installed through Claude Code’s documented plugin flow.
Guide limitations
- The README documents these installation commands but does not provide execution or compatibility test results.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agent Skills — MicrosoftDocs | Give an assistant focused guidance for Azure service development. | CLI, Desktop | |
| Spectra | Clarify requirements and compare approaches before proposing a change. | CLI, Desktop | The README lists a macOS and Windows desktop app, and a Homebrew installation for macOS. The CLI is published through npm and requires Node.js 22.14 or newer. |
| Skills — michaelshimeles | Install reusable task-specific skills into a coding-agent setup. | CLI | The repository README provides an npx installation command for most coding agents and describes automatic or explicit skill invocation in Claude Code. |
