Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an application has Ethereum transaction input or receipt logs and the matching contract ABI, and needs to present decoded method or event data.
Who it is for
- JavaScript and Node.js developers building Ethereum transaction viewers or dApp debugging interfaces.
- Developers who need to inspect method input or event logs for contracts whose ABIs they can provide.
Documented uses
- Decode encoded Ethereum transaction input into method details.
- Convert transaction-receipt logs into decoded event data.
- Add decoding to a Node.js utility or browser-based inspection interface.
Requirements & limits
- The contract ABI must be supplied manually before decoding.
- The documented examples cover method input and logs from a transaction receipt.
- The README documents npm and Bower installation and Node.js and browser-script use.
- The repository specifies a GPL-3.0 license.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Decode Ethereum transaction method input
Set up Abi Decoder with a contract ABI and pass transaction input data to its method decoder.
Before you start
- Node.js or a browser JavaScript setup
- Abi Decoder installed through npm or Bower, or loaded from the documented Bower browser script
- The relevant contract ABI and encoded transaction input
Steps
Install the library with npm or Bower, or load its browser script.
Import or instantiate the library in the chosen environment.
Pass the contract ABI to addABI.
Pass the encoded transaction input to decodeMethod.
Expected outcome
The library returns decoded method data for the supplied transaction input.
Guide limitations
- The relevant ABI must be provided manually.
- The example documents decoding input data, not submitting or retrieving transactions.
Decode logs from a transaction receipt
Pass receipt logs to Abi Decoder to obtain decoded event records.
Before you start
- Abi Decoder installed and instantiated in Node.js or a browser JavaScript setup
- The relevant contract ABI added manually
- A transaction receipt with logs, obtained through a Web3 call as in the repository example
Steps
Add the contract ABI with addABI.
Obtain the transaction receipt and its logs.
Pass the receipt logs to decodeLogs.
Expected outcome
The library returns decoded log data for the supplied receipt logs.
Guide limitations
- The documented example uses Web3 to obtain the receipt; receipt retrieval is a separate step.
- The relevant ABI must be provided manually.
