Practical overview
When it fits
Use Bokken during local development when you want to exercise transactions or inspect a native-compiled Solana program in an emulated environment.
Who it is for
- Solana program developers working in Rust.
- Teams writing JavaScript or TypeScript integration tests with @solana/web3.js.
Documented uses
- Step through transaction instructions while debugging a Solana program.
- Inspect program execution and state using native Rust debugging tools.
- Exercise program and front-end code together with instant-confirmation transactions.
Requirements & limits
The GitHub repository is public and provides source and setup instructions.
- Bokken compiles programs for the developer’s native system rather than invoking precompiled SBF programs; SBF invocation is listed as pending.
- Implemented emulation includes selected System Program operations, cross-program invocations, persistent state and several RPC-style methods.
- Some support is partial, including state rollback, return data and clock sysvar data; latest-blockhash responses use fake data.
- The project documents development as early and notes that not all Solana features are implemented or emulated.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up a native-compiled program with Bokken
Prepare a Rust Solana program to connect to a Bokken instance for local transaction debugging.
Before you start
- A Rust Cargo project and the target program’s source code.
- The documented dependencies: bokken-runtime 0.1, tokio 1.0 and color-eyre 0.5.
Steps
Add bokken-runtime, the program crate, tokio and color-eyre to the project’s Cargo dependencies.
Use the bokken_runtime::bokken_program! macro in main.rs to generate the debuggable program entry point.
Launch Bokken with a socket path and save path.
Run the native-compiled program with the same socket path and a valid program ID.
Expected outcome
The program connects to Bokken and is registered in its console, ready to receive transactions.
Guide limitations
- The README describes the project as early in development, with some Solana features incomplete.
- The documented setup does not establish support for every program or runtime behavior.
