Practical overview
When it fits
Use it for persona-led conversations where character setup and per-conversation model controls matter, or as a starting codebase for a companion-chat service with authentication and credit billing.
Who it is for
- People who want to chat with preset or user-created AI personas.
- Developers and service builders creating a character-based companion-chat website.
Documented uses
- Choose a preset persona and start a character-focused conversation.
- Create a persona with custom personality, greeting, instructions, avatar and visibility.
- Adjust Temperature, Max Tokens or System Prompt for a particular chat.
- Use an application codebase that connects chat persistence with Google authentication and Stripe credit billing.
Requirements & limits
- The documented model-routing integration is MuAPI and requires a MU_API_KEY for model calls.
- The application describes Google OAuth authentication and Stripe credit-checkout workflows.
- Its documented stack includes Next.js, Prisma, Supabase/PostgreSQL, NextAuth and Stripe.
- The README's shared-database warning makes schema introspection important before pushing changes to a shared PostgreSQL pool.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare a local development setup
Clone the project, install its dependencies, configure environment values and start the development server.
Before you start
- Git and Node.js/npm
- A PostgreSQL database and the service credentials required by the configured environment
- Environment values copied from .env.example and populated with project-specific keys
Steps
Clone the repository and change into the open-character-ai directory.
Run npm install, then copy .env.example to .env and add the required keys.
Generate the Prisma client with npx prisma generate and initialize the schema with npx prisma db push.
Run npm run dev; the README identifies http://localhost:3000 as the local address.
Expected outcome
A local development server is described as available at http://localhost:3000.
Guide limitations
- The README warns that the PostgreSQL database may be shared with other applications; introspect existing tables with npx prisma db pull and follow its Pull-Declare-Push-Cleanup procedure before schema changes in a shared pool.
- The project requires external database, authentication, billing and model-routing configuration; the guide does not verify that credentials or services work.
