Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when a data-integrity process needs to submit hashes—not original files or data—to Chainpoint and then manage or verify the resulting proofs from a CLI.

Who it is for

  • Developers adding Chainpoint proof creation or verification to command-line workflows.
  • Teams recording data-integrity hashes and managing the resulting proofs locally.

Documented uses

  • Submit one or more hashes for anchoring through a Chainpoint Gateway.
  • Retrieve updated proofs and check their anchor claims.
  • Keep, inspect, export or delete local hash and proof records.
  • Verify Bitcoin anchors locally through the included Bitcoin Header Node interface.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The README describes single-file binaries for Alpine Linux x64, Linux x64 and macOS x64 that include Node.js, and installation through `npm install -g chainpoint-cli`.

  • The CLI sends hashes to a Chainpoint Gateway; the README says the original data is not sent.
  • The command set covers submission, proof updates, verification, evaluation, export and local record management.
  • Bitcoin-anchor verification can use the included Bitcoin Header Node interface for local verification.
  • This package is for Chainpoint v4; the README identifies version 1.6.1 for the older v3 Network.
  • The public repository identifies JavaScript as its language and Apache-2.0 as its license.

Source-based practical guide

Submit a data hash and verify its Chainpoint proof

Create a proof record from a data hash, retrieve its proof and check its anchor claims.

Before you start

  • Chainpoint CLI for the Chainpoint v4 Network.
  • A hexadecimal hash from 40 to 128 characters; SHA-256 is recommended.
  • A Chainpoint Gateway connection.

Steps

  1. Generate a hash of the local file or data; do not submit the original data.

  2. Run chp submit and retain the returned proof ID.

  3. Run chp update to retrieve an updated proof when available.

  4. Run chp verify to verify the proof's anchor claims.

Expected outcome

The CLI stores the submitted hash and proof locally and reports the proof's verification status and anchor level.

Guide limitations

  • The package targets Chainpoint v4; the README identifies version 1.6.1 for the older v3 Network.
  • The initial proof may be anchored to the Calendar; later blockchain anchors may become available.
