Practical overview

When it fits

Use PicPilot when you need a self-hosted server for product-image generation or editing workflows, or an endpoint to convert images into video.

Who it is for

  • Teams producing product photography and other marketing visuals.
  • Developers who want to run image generation, editing and image-to-video workflows behind API endpoints.

Documented uses

  • Generate images with SDXL and LoRA.
  • Inpaint existing images with FLUX.
  • Extend images using SDXL outpainting.
  • Convert images into video with CogVideoX.
  • Process supported image tasks in configurable batches.

Requirements & limits

The project is publicly available as an MIT-licensed GitHub repository and documents both local and Docker setup.

  • The project documents a GPU-enabled Docker run command and recommends powerful GPUs for optimal performance, especially for FLUX.
  • Image-to-video processing is limited to one image at a time.
  • FLUX inpainting and SDXL outpainting document maximum batch sizes of four; image-to-video documents a maximum of one.
  • SDXL generation batch size and timeout are configured in tti_settings.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install dependencies and start the PicPilot server

Set up PicPilot from its repository and start its API server.

Before you start

  • A Python environment with the project dependencies installed using the documented run.sh script.
  • A powerful GPU is recommended for optimal performance, particularly with FLUX.

Steps

  1. Clone the PicPilot repository and change into its directory.

  2. Run ./run.sh to install dependencies.

  3. Change into the api directory and run python picpilot.py.

Expected outcome

The README states that the server starts on port 8000 with the available API endpoints.

Guide limitations

  • Optimal performance, especially for FLUX, requires a powerful GPU.
  • Processing time varies with task complexity and input size.
