Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Pigo when a Go-based image workflow needs face or facial-feature detection, especially when avoiding OpenCV or C/C++ bindings for the library is useful.

Who it is for

  • Go developers adding face detection to computer-vision applications
  • Teams building image-processing workflows that need eye or pupil locations or facial landmarks

Documented uses

  • Detect faces in an image and mark their locations.
  • Locate eyes and pupils using a pupil-localization cascade.
  • Extract facial landmark points using landmark cascade files.
  • Produce detection coordinates in JSON for downstream processing.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and MIT-licensed. The project documents a Go installation path and binary releases for users who do not want to install Go.

  • The basic CLI face-detection task requires a face cascade binary file.
  • Eye and pupil localization and facial landmarks each require their respective cascade data.
  • Pigo provides a Go library as well as a command-line utility.
  • The library does not require OpenCV or other third-party modules for its documented library use; the real-time desktop example may require Python and OpenCV.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Run face detection on an image with the CLI

Provide an input image and face cascade to the bundled command-line utility and save an annotated output image.

Before you start

  • Pigo command-line utility, installed with Go or obtained as a binary release
  • An input image
  • A face-detection cascade binary file

Steps

  1. Install the CLI with the command below, or obtain a binary from the repository’s releases.

    Documented command
    go install github.com/esimov/pigo/cmd/pigo@latest
  2. Run pigo -in input.jpg -out output.jpg -cf cascade/facefinder, replacing the paths with the locations of your image and cascade file.

Expected outcome

The utility writes an image with detected faces marked.

Guide limitations

  • The command requires a valid face cascade binary file.
  • Rotation handling may require adapting the -angle value to the image.
