Practical overview

When it fits

Use Fulcrum when you need to serve SPV access for a supported coin from a server connected to its full node.

Who it is for

  • Operators who want to host SPV server access for Bitcoin Cash clients.
  • Operators serving Bitcoin or Litecoin clients who can provide the corresponding supported full node.

Documented uses

Requirements & limits

The project is open source under GPLv3. The README describes prebuilt static binaries and source compilation options.

  • A supported full node with JSON-RPC enabled is required; txindex must be enabled and pruning disabled.
  • For Litecoin, the README supports Litecoin Core v0.17.0 or later and names no other supported full node.
  • Recommended hardware is a 64-bit CPU, at least 1 GB RAM and an SSD; the README gives approximate mainnet disk figures of 40 GB for BCH and 133 GB for BTC, dated August 2023.
  • Building from source requires Qt Core and Qt Networking 5.15.2 or later and a modern 64-bit C++20 compiler.
  • ZeroMQ and miniupnpc are optional dependencies for additional operation and networking options.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Compile Fulcrum from source on Linux or macOS

Build Fulcrum from its project file using the documented command-line process.

Before you start

  • Qt Core and Qt Networking 5.15.2 or later.
  • A modern 64-bit C++20 compiler.
  • On Linux, the required Qt development libraries, qmake in PATH, and libbz2-dev.

Steps

  1. Ensure qmake is in PATH and the required Qt development libraries are installed.

  2. Run qmake to generate the Makefile.

  3. Run the command below; replace 8 with the number of cores on the machine.

    Documented command
    make -j8

Expected outcome

The documented command-line build process produces a Fulcrum build from source.

Guide limitations

  • The command-line instructions are specified for Linux and macOS.
  • Qt 5.15.1 and earlier are not supported.
  • The README also describes a Qt Creator build path, but the outcome of any particular build is not independently verified.
