Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want a hands-on Rust course for Solana client workflows inside VS Code, with local exercise checks rather than lessons alone.
Who it is for
- Learners practicing Solana client-side development with Rust.
- Instructors or contributors considering adapting Markdown lessons and Rust exercise/test structures.
Documented uses
- Study Solana client-side lessons beside the code being edited.
- Practice Rust exercises covering keys, transfers, tokens, accounts, RPC and transaction workflows.
- Check exercise work through a CLI runner and test harness.
- Adapt existing lesson and exercise structures for a customized course, with appropriate modifications.
Requirements & limits
- The Rust CLI and test harness are the source of truth; the VS Code extension supplies the clickable lesson interface.
- Surfpool is required by the listed setup, but only exercises needing local chain state start it, in offline mode.
- Progress is stored in VS Code workspace storage; reset restores baseline exercise files and clears progress.
- The course is identified as a development-version project.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Open the course panel and check an exercise
Read a lesson in VS Code, edit its Rust exercise and run the course check.
Before you start
- VS Code
- Rust toolchain with Cargo
- Surfpool CLI installed and available on PATH
- Recommended: rust-analyzer and Even Better TOML VS Code extensions
Steps
Open the repository in VS Code and trust the workspace if prompted.
Open the command palette, run Tasks: Run Task, and choose Course: Start Course UI.
Open the Solana Course panel from the activity bar, read a lesson and edit TODOs in exercises/*/src/lib.rs.
Click Check to run the matching exercise check.
Expected outcome
The course runner checks the selected exercise; exercises needing local chain state use offline Surfpool, while pure instruction-building and derivation exercises do not start it.
Guide limitations
- The course is described as a development-version course.
- Reset restores starter files and clears progress, and will overwrite work in exercises after confirmation.
